Digital Detox
Last month I was inspired to do sort of a digital detox. Now I didn't fully give up with technology but I did limit myself on how much social media and stuff like that, that I used.
At the beginning of November I watched Estée Lalonde's (EssieButton) 48-hour digital detox which I'll link at the end of this post but after watching that I wondered how I would be if I limited myself to technology. I am a high school student so I am constantly on my phone checking what's new on twitter or on instagram and also texting my friends. I would be lying if I said my phone wasn't attached to me most of the day. I'm someone who makes goals every month and there are times when those goals are achieved and times when they aren't. So my goal for November was to limit my technology use and do others things instead.
Usually in the morning when I wake up, the first thing I will do is check my phone. Obviously I still did this because my alarm is on my phone but what I didn't do was check my social media apps. I would simply unlock my phone and maybe check the weather and that's it. Now for breakfast time, I would usually watch netflix or catch up on youtube videos. But instead I would make my breakfast and sit down with a good book. After I finished getting ready that's when I would give myself some time to check my phone and see what's going on. Now for school, there are times when I had to be on the computer for school work purposes but other than that I checked my phone only a couple times throughout the day and at lunch. As oppose to multiple times during each class. I will usually give myself time after school to check social media and whatnot and do homework. Sometimes that would require me to use my laptop and sometimes not. I put my phone away at least an hour before I go to bed. I have always tried to do this but this month especially I tried to stick with it.
There were definitely days, especially in the evening when I kind of broke my little routine but most of the month I was pretty consistent. During this last month I found myself doing things I always loved like reading and writing but never really made time to do as often as I did this month. I found that I didn't feel the need to always check my phone and be update to date with every single thing that everyone else was doing.
I obviously love social media and and everything about technology but it's nice to have a break from it and focus on the things that you love. So I encourage all of you to find the things you love and make more time for it.
